NVQ explained

Recognition for what you can do.

A National Vocational Qualification is a competence-based qualification assessed through the skills, knowledge and behaviours you demonstrate in your real job.

What makes an NVQ different?

Unlike a classroom course, an NVQ is mainly about proving occupational competence. You build a portfolio showing that you meet the qualification's assessment criteria and National Occupational Standards. Your assessor guides the process, assesses evidence and may observe you at work.

NVQs are available at different levels. The correct level depends on the complexity of your role, your responsibility, the decisions you make and the evidence you can produce - not simply the card you would like to obtain.

What evidence can be used?

Workplace observationsProject documents and reportsPhotographs and videoProfessional discussionsWitness testimonyDrawings, programmes and records

How long does it take?

There is no guaranteed completion time. It depends on the qualification, your experience, access to live work, the quality of your evidence and how promptly you respond. Any fast-track service provides prioritised support only; every assessment and quality requirement still applies.
